The Gate to Abundant Life

Jesus, being the supreme preacher and teacher, often uses images and illustrations that are connected to spiritual realities about Himself, us, and the the world; these are called parables. In our text this week, Jesus takes a culturally common, well-understood image of sheep-farming and draws out major implications about who He is and how people can have abundant life in His name because He is The Gate.

The Joy of Rejection

These days, if you speak loud enough in the public square about your faith in Jesus of Nazareth, sure enough, you will find yourself on the receiving end of some distasteful, maybe even hurtful, responses. We might testify to the work Jesus has done in our lives and not be believed; we might express the common sense facts about the person and work of the historical Jesus and be maligned… we may even be rejected because of our faith in Jesus. While it can be deeply painful, what’s waiting on the other side of that rejection is a kind of joy that will make every single second of the pain worth it, and that joy’s name is Jesus.

The Healing Light

God’s word diagnoses this cosmos with an underlying condition: fallen into darkness. It explains why such a beautiful world can be so full of suffering and affliction while simultaneously showing us this wasn’t the way the world was originally designed to be. As much as we attempt to turn back the effects or find ways to escape the pain, there’s only one real, true, shining Light that, not only exposes what's in the dark but can heal those things trapped in the dark. Jesus, the Christ, is not just a shining light, He is the healing Light of the World.

Lift up the Light

Jesus is the Light of the World. He isn’t always who we want him to be, but in every situation, in every way, he is exactly who we NEED him to be. We may want him to rescue us from our sufferings, He may want to repurpose our sufferings for his good plans. We may want Him to be a nice addition to our lives to bring us comfort and prosperity, while He aims to be the greatest addiction of our lives to bring us permanent life and joy in Him. We don’t get to redefine the Light, we simply lift it up and stand in it, and by it we finally see ourselves and everything around us.

Covering Disgrace with His Grace

Jesus’ ministry to a broken, rebellious world is stocked full of accounts of sinners guilty according to the law being forgiven according to His grace. We can make no plea, we can bring nothing to clear our guilt and condemnation… but Jesus! He refuses to condemn us to that which we deserve, He came to deliver us from it, and that sets us free to live a transformed life. The woman caught in adultery is a story that exemplifies the Gospel of God’s matchless, infinite grace.

Will the Real Messiah, Please Stand Up?

Generations have asked, “Will the real Messiah, please stand up?” Debate over the identity of Jesus of Nazareth is nothing new. Some say Jesus was a good man, others a teacher, and others a prophet. Others throughout history have shared these titles, but neither compare to the chief claim of the Christian. We are among history’s few who are convinced: Jesus is the Messiah. Serving Jesus’ Flock

Jesus, the Good & Chief Shepherd, dealt not strictly in the spiritual needs of humanity, but also cared for the practical, physical needs of His flock (healing the sick, benevolence to the needy, etc.). The Church is instructed to structure its leadership and ministry in a similar way, with shepherds (overseers) to care for the spiritual needs of the flock, and servants (deacons) to care for the practical needs. Find out how essential servants are to the life and health of the local flock and what we’re doing about it to unsure our church family is served like Jesus.
